Pariah S. Burke is a design and publishing workflow expert bringing creative efficiency into studios, agencies, and publications around the world as principal of Workflow:Creative (www.WorkflowCreative.com). He is the author of the first InDesign book written for experienced InDesign users, Mastering InDesign CS3 for Print Design and Production (Sybex, 2007), and other books on Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, and QuarkXPress; author of more than 250 published articles; the former trainer and technical lead for InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat to Adobe’s own technical support team; a freelance graphic designer with 20 years experience; a WordPress evangelist; and the publisher of the Websites Workflow:Freelance (www.workflowFreelance.com), Gurus Unleashed (www.GurusUnleashed.com), Quark VS InDesign.com (www.QuarkVSInDesign.com), and Designorati (www.Designorati.com). Why GU Was Created

Gurus Unleashed was created by Pariah S. Burke (me). It began as a service not only by me but also for me. As someone who is not only a creative pro software author, consultant, trainer, and fan, but also a freelance graphic and Web designer, I need to keep up with the latest news and information about Photoshop, InDesign, InCopy, Illustrator, QuarkXPress, and Acrobat.

But that information is published across hundreds of sites, by hundreds of writers, every week. I just don’t have the time to visit every site and check for new articles. I built Gurus Unleashed (“GU”) to collect and categorize all that information for me. I could then get all the information I need in one place, categorized according to the top creative pro applications I use every day. In other words: GU prevents the critical information I need from slipping through the cracks.

During the summer of 2008 it occurred to me that the rest of the creative professional community could also benefit from the unique service of Gurus Unleashed. So here it is! I put a nice frontend on Gurus Unleashed and opened it to the public. It went into public beta 25 August 2008, and has been improving daily since then. It hit version 2.0 12 February 2009.

Although GU may appear at first blush to be fully automated, it isn’t. I’m here every single day. Every publication and guru you find on GU is handpicked. If I’m not adding or refining a new feature, tweaking the code, checking for broken links, or adding new gurus and publications, I’m reading the latest articles and tutorials right alongside the thousands of readers like you who follow on GurusUnleashed.com, Twitter.com, or by e-mail and RSS.

Yes, GU is advertising supported. Even at a beta stage GU traffic exploded to more than half a million unique visitors in its first 30 days. That’s a lot of bandwidth to pay for! Sketches and comps for GurusUnleashed.com’s design were created in Adobe Illustrator CS3 and CS4, with final production of all graphics performed in Adobe Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4 Extended, and Fireworks CS4. PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript were coded by hand in BradSoft TopStyle Pro.
